Description
CHRYSANTHEMUM ‘Matchstick’. 16″ tall, 3″ bloom, full sun, late summer-early fall bloom. This fantastic mum has quill shaped petals that are golden yellow with fire red tips, just like matchsticks. Neat, tightly branched clumps are upright but do not need staking. Deer resistant. Zone 5-9. Potted in 3″ pot.
Mums are a must have in late summer/fall sun gardens. Flowers range from 1″ up to an impressive 6″ in diameter (with disbudding). Mums will produce their flowers in the summer instead of the fall, if not pinched back. Stop pinching back by mid-summer for the best fall show. They spread by rhizomes, so plants can become larger as they mature. For winter care, add 4-6 inches of mulch around the plant after the ground has frozen in the fall. Don’t cut back mums when tidying up flower beds in the fall. The dead growth insulates the roots. Cut off the dead stems and leaves when you see the first green shoots emerging in the spring.
